Vigil held in Queens to honor 15-year-old Jaden Pierre as community demands answers

Queens, New York — A solemn vigil was held at Roy Wilkins Park in St. Albans as family members, friends, and community leaders gathered to honor the life of Jaden Pierre, the 15-year-old who lost his life following a shooting that has shaken the borough.

The gathering took place just days after the incident, with attendees lighting candles, placing flowers, and sharing messages of remembrance at the location where Jaden Pierre was fatally injured.

According to the New York Police Department, the shooting occurred during a large altercation at the park. Authorities reported that the teenager was struck in the chest and later transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Family members described Jaden Pierre as a kind and energetic young person who enjoyed basketball and spending time with friends. His aunt, Shakira Weston, expressed the family’s grief and referred to the incident as senseless violence.

His mother, Shanelle Weston, has also spoken publicly, sharing her heartbreak and emphasizing that she was unaware her son planned to attend the gathering that day.

The vigil drew the presence of public officials, including Letitia JamesDonovan Richards, and Jumaane Williams, who joined the community in paying their respects and calling for justice.

Meanwhile, the NYPD confirmed that the suspect remains at large, with investigators continuing to review surveillance footage and gather evidence. Images of the individual wanted for questioning have been circulated in the area as part of the ongoing search.

The tragedy has sparked renewed concern about youth safety and public gatherings, with residents calling for increased preventive measures and community engagement.

As candles flickered across the park, the vigil served as both a tribute to Jaden Pierre and a collective call for accountability, as the community continues to seek answers and healing.
