PHILADELPHIA (WKRC) — A 2-month-old is dead and their mother severely injured after a private ambulance crashed on the way to the hospital in Philadelphia, reports WPVI.
Investigators say emergency crews were called to the infant’s home early Sunday, but the mother and child had already left their home in a private MedStar ambulance before first responders arrived. The driver of the ambulance — a 51-year-old who is also reportedly the infant’s grandfather — is suspected of driving impaired and will face charges, police said.
Surveillance video showed the ambulance run a red light and strike a car before hitting a pole and landing on its side. Investigators say the driver was under the influence, driving at a high speed and did not have lights or sirens activated.
The infant and mother were thrown through the windshield. Both were taken to a hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead. The mother is in critical condition.
