Motorsports inherently carry heavy risks, and those dangers are not just limited to the drivers behind the wheel. The dedicated crews, safety workers, and officials who keep these high-octane events running safely also put themselves on the line. Unfortunately, dirt track racing is now mourning a loss after a horrific accident unfolded over the weekend in Texas.
On Saturday night, a routine response to a racing incident at Kennedale Speedway Park took a horrible turn after Sprint Car driver Marcus Thomas flipped his vehicle while entering the racing surface. According to an official statement released by the World of Outlaws racing series, two emergency vehicles collided on the grounds while attempting to reach the initial scene.
The impact between the two response vehicles resulted in severe consequences for the track personnel. The World Racing Group confirmed that one official tragically lost their life in the crash, while a second official sustained serious injuries.
The World of Outlaws organization took to social media to announce the heartbreaking news and update fans on the status of the weekend’s scheduled events.
“While officials were responding to an incident at Kennedale Speedway Park Saturday night, two emergency vehicles collided, resulting in a serious injury to one official and a fatal injury to another,” the series stated. “There is an ongoing investigation of the incident. The remainder of the event was postponed. Everybody in the racing community, and those affected, appreciates your thoughts and prayers.”
The Legacy of Kennedale Speedway Park
Located just southeast of Fort Worth, Texas, Kennedale Speedway Park is an absolute staple of the region’s grassroots racing scene. The quarter-mile dirt oval has hosted countless high-octane events over the decades, drawing massive local crowds and premier national touring series like the World of Outlaws to its gates.
Nestled right beside the grounds of the formerly famous—and now closed—Cowtown Speedway, Kennedale remains one of the most vital hubs for dirt track racing in the Lone Star State. Its tight, high-banked corners are beloved by drivers and fans alike, making this weekend’s sudden tragedy hit the tightly-knit local community even harder.
Investigation Ongoing
Following the fatal crash, the remainder of the Saturday night racing program was immediately canceled so emergency crews could tend to their own. Local authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation into exactly how the two emergency response vehicles managed to collide during the rollout.
The identities of the personnel involved have not yet been publicly released out of respect for their grieving families and the ongoing investigation. The incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the bravery and inherent risks taken by track officials to ensure the safety of drivers and fans alike.
