The Hawaii-set performances marked the competition’s “Ohana Round,” where contestants performed in front of judges, family members, and industry insiders.

While fans have grown familiar with Richardson’s soulful vocals reminiscent of Mary J. Blige, viewers have also come to know another important figure in her journey: her son, Drew. During her initial Idol audition, Richardson performed “Glitter in the Air” by P!nk and opened up about her life as a single mother, gospel singer, and music teacher from Pensacola, Florida. The moment immediately resonated with viewers, especially as her son sang along from the sidelines.
She shared, “My son means the world to me. He’s all I got. He’s my best friend,” before stepping in front of the judges.

For the Top 30 round, Richardson again centered her performance around her son. Before taking the stage, she revealed the touching inspiration behind her song choice.
“This time around,” Richardson said, she was dedicating her performance of “‘A Thousand Years’” to my lovely son. I want to let him know that, no matter how grown he gets, I’ll love him forever. And every day we’re getting one step closer to where we want to be.”
The heartfelt connection was visible throughout the performance. As Richardson sang onstage, Drew sat in the audience quietly mouthing out every lyric, fully invested in the moment while watching his mother perform.
Dressed in a black-and-white dress shirt paired with white pants and large hoop earrings, Richardson performed the ballad seated on a stool under the open Hawaiian sky. Backed by a live band, she delivered a controlled yet emotional rendition that highlighted the depth and texture of her voice. Her performance built gradually, beginning soft and then expanding into full vocal runs and gospel-tinged power notes.
At one point during the chorus, Richardson stepped away from the microphone, allowing her signature raspy growl to cut through the air as she leaned into the emotion of the lyrics.
“I have died every day waiting for you / Darling, don’t be afraid / I have loved you for a thousand years / I’ll love you for a thousand more,” she sang, drawing cheers from the crowd.
The moment visibly moved judge Carrie Underwood, who became emotional as she offered her feedback. As the camera panned to Drew wiping tears from his eyes in the audience, Underwood reflected on the powerful connection between mother and son.
Underwood said, “To have the gift of watching you and getting to watch him, like when I’m on stage, and my boys are out there, I don’t know what they’re doing. And I feel like I just got a glimpse of what they might be doing with me on stage and just made my mama heart so happy. Your talent is limitless.”
Richardson’s path to the Idol stage has been years in the making. She previously competed on Sunday Best, the gospel competition series on BET, where she placed in the final four. Following that appearance, she scored a major milestone when her single “So Good” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Gospel Airplay Chart.

Her career has also extended into acting. In 2022, Richardson appeared in the film Due Season, portraying the character Vicky Waters alongside veteran actress Vivica A. Fox.
Despite an already accomplished career, Richardson’s journey on American Idol is still unfolding. At the end of the episode, she learned she had officially advanced to the competition’s Top 20, bringing her one step closer to the title. Now, over the next two weeks the Top 20 Idol hopefuls will perform for America’s votes at Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii, competing for a spot in the next round with guidance from superstar mentors Brad Paisley and KeKe Palmer.
Fans can continue following Keyla Richardson’s American Idol journey when new episodes of the popular singing competition show air on Monday nights at 8/7c on ABC, or stream the episode the next day on Hulu.
