A devastated mother is speaking out after her 12-year-old daughter tragically died days after being struck in the head with a metal water bottle during a fight at Reseda High School in Los Angeles.
Khimberly Zavaleta, a bright and promising young girl, was attacked while trying to protect her older sister, according to her mother, Elma Chuquipa.
The heart-wrenching incident occurred on Thursday, February 19, and after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage, Khimberly died on Wednesday, February 25, just days later.
The altercation took place around dismissal time in a school hallway, where tensions had been rising.
According to her mother, a tall student approached Khimberly’s older sister and began pushing her.
Khimberly, with her protective instincts, stepped in to defend her sister, even suggesting that they go to the principal’s office to resolve the situation peacefully.
But the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
“My daughter tried to pull them apart so they wouldn’t hit her sister, and that’s when she was struck in the head,” her mother said, tears evident in her voice.
Amid the chaos of the fight, someone allegedly threw a metal water bottle, hitting Khimberly directly in the head.
Reports have indicated that video footage of the incident does not clearly capture the exact moment the bottle was thrown, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the tragic event.
Initially, Khimberly was rushed to the emergency room, where she seemed stable, and her family hoped that she would recover.
However, in the following days, Khimberly began to experience severe headaches.
Concerned, she returned to the hospital, but was reportedly sent home once again, as doctors did not anticipate the severity of her condition.
Just days later, Khimberly collapsed.
“We rushed her to the emergency room, and she arrived without vital signs,” her mother said, her voice breaking with grief.
Doctors discovered a severe brain hemorrhage, a result of the blow to her head.
She was immediately intubated and urgently transferred to UCLA Children’s Hospital, where surgeons performed emergency surgery.
In an attempt to relieve the pressure on her brain, part of her skull was removed, and the blood that had accumulated was cleared.
Despite the efforts to save her, the damage was already irreversible.
Doctors later informed the family that a second surgery had only a 1% chance of success and that Khimberly had already suffered brain death.
At 3:30 a.m., Khimberly was pronounced dead, and the devastating news shattered her family.
“It was very painful to leave my daughter in the hospital hoping to bring her back home,” her mother said, the pain of the loss weighing heavily on her words.
“She always told me, ‘I will never leave you.’ And I told her, ‘You promised you would never leave me.’”
Khimberly’s family remembers her as “the baby of the family,” a loving and energetic young girl who had so much more to give.
She was known for her love of music, her passion for volleyball, and for walking her two beloved dogs.
Her family also recalled her dreams and the bright future she had ahead of her, which was tragically stolen from her in an instant.
Khimberly’s death has deeply shaken the community and reignited concerns about school violence.
The Los Angeles Police Department is actively investigating the case as a homicide, although no arrests or charges have been publicly announced as of yet.
