A DAD is fighting for his life after he suffered a cardiac arrest just one mile from the finish line of the London Marathon.<\/p>\n

Gareth Hopkins, 43, was running in memory of his nan to raise\u00a0money\u00a0for Age UK last weekend before he was forced to end his race and be taken to hospital.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0GoFundMe\u00a0page has been set up to help his family.<\/p>\n

Gareth\u2019s pal James Pearson wrote on the page: \u201cWhile the future remains uncertain, we continue to stay hopeful and positive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis sudden and devastating event has had a profound impact on Gareth\u2019s wife, Jodie, their young children, his parents, and his brother.<\/p>\n

\u201cGareth has dedicated the past 20 years to serving others as a paramedic with the East of\u00a0England\u00a0Ambulance Service.\"London<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout his career, he has always been committed to helping people in their time of need.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany friends, family, and colleagues have kindly asked how they can support Gareth and his family during this incredibly difficult time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn response, we have set up this page to help ease some of the financial and practical pressures while Gareth receives treatment in London.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gareth and his brother Chris both entered the marathon to honour their grandmother Tricia Potts, who died in January last year, following a six year battle against Alzheimer\u2019s and\u00a0dementia.<\/p>\n

Gareth, from Hoddesdon,\u00a0Hertfordshire, took up running in late August.<\/p>\n

He told the\u00a0BBC\u00a0before the race: \u201cI\u2019ve never done any exercise for five years. I don\u2019t go to the gym; I\u2019m not a runner. I watched Chris do it last year\u2026 and I thought \u2018I can probably do that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Gareth added he was determined to finish the marathon \u201cregardless\u201d, having lost a stone in weight and training for the 26-mile\u00a0race<\/span>.\"London<\/p>\n

He told\u00a0The Comet\u00a0in March: \u201cMy career has shown me how much a little support can change a life, and my nan\u2019s journey showed me how much we need to do to fight dementia.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThis is a massive personal challenge for me. Until recently, I didn\u2019t exercise at all. I started \u2018Couch to 5K\u2019 last year and found it incredibly tough.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing from that to 26.2 miles is daunting, but after watching my brother and friends complete the marathon last year, I knew I had to try.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s\u00a0London Marathon, which took place last Saturday, raised some \u00a387.5million for\u00a0charity.<\/p>\n

Kenyan Sabastian Sawe set a new world record for the fastest marathon ever in a time of 1:59:30.
