4 p.m. Agents find Athena\u2019s clothes<\/h3>\n

An FBI special agent testified about finding children\u2019s clothing behind a shed in the grass near Horner\u2019s house. He also collected a FedEx shirt and hoodie found on a bed as evidence. Jurors were shown photos of that evidence.<\/p>\n

3:10 p.m. Bruce Sherman testifies<\/h3>\n

Former Texas Ranger Bruce Sherman was called to the stand. He now works for a different agency, but at the time he was involved in the case in a support role. He was tasked with looking into Horner\u2019s associates and digital footprint.<\/p>\n

He also testified about being part of the team that searched Horner\u2019s home shortly after he was detained. He conducted recorded but informal interviews with Horner\u2019s family members while their home was being searched.<\/p>\n

2:20 p.m. FBI special agent testifies<\/h3>\n

Prosecutors called FBI Special Agent Taylor Page to the stand to testify about phone records that were pulled in this case. He said the records showed a phone associated with Horner and a second device in his delivery truck were at some point in the location where Athena\u2019s body was found.<\/p>\n

1:20 p.m. Cross-examination<\/h3>\n
\"\"<\/p>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Horner\u2019s defense team began cross-examining Ranger Espinoza about his investigation, pointing out issues with reading Horner his Miranda rights, allowing him access to an attorney, and things that were or were not included in his police report.<\/p>\n

Defense attorney Susan Anderson also pointed out that during the jailhouse interview, Horner offered to enter a plea, give up his defense, and go to prison for life in exchange for him \u201ctelling you everything you would like to know.\u201d Espinoza agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat he was willing to do if you were to speak to the judge, speak to the prosecutors about the possibility of electronic monitoring?\u201d the defense asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, ma\u2019am,\u201d the investigator agreed.<\/p>\n

12:10 p.m. Lunch break<\/h3>\n

The jury was dismissed for an hour for a lunch break.<\/p>\n

12 p.m. \u2018I\u2019m not a monster\u2019<\/h3>\n

Horner told investigators during the jailhouse interview that he was being held in a padded cell and that \u201ceverybody there looks at me like I\u2019m a monster.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not a monster,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

11:40 p.m. \u2018I thought it was a nightmare\u2019<\/h3>\n

During the jailhouse interview, Horner told investigators that he felt like he had different states. He used a car analogy, saying sometimes he was driving like normal and other times Zero was driving while he was along for the ride.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then there\u2019s other times that I feel I\u2019m in the trunk,\u201d he said. \u201cI have no idea what\u2019s going on. There\u2019s been times where I wake up and I have no idea how I got there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The investigator asked him what he recalled about the night Athena died.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat night, I kind of had a nightmare. I thought it was a nightmare until I found, until I found her pants in my backpack,\u201d Horner said.<\/p>\n

11:33 p.m. Multiple personalities<\/h3>\n

Horner told investigators during the jailhouse interview that his fianc\u00e9e has multiple personalities. She said he has three, but he said he only believes he has two.<\/p>\n

11:20 a.m. Suicidal thoughts<\/h3>\n

In the jailhouse interview, Horner told investigators that he began taking his medication because he was having suicidal thoughts. He said that\u2019s when he started feeling like he had a \u201clittle devil on his shoulder.\u201d<\/p>\n

10:15 a.m. Dec. 7 interview<\/h3>\n

Jurors began watching video of Ranger Espinoza meeting with Horner on Dec. 7, 2022 after Horner asked to talk to him again.<\/p>\n

Horner asked the investigator to let him out of jail for a month so that he could spend Christmas with his family. He promised to tell the investigators everything if they agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you know what you did was wrong?\u201d Espinoza asked him.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d Horner said. \u201cI haven\u2019t been on that medicine for five days, and it\u2019s starting to wear off. I\u2019ve actually been crying. Do you know what it\u2019s like, not being able to cry for months and months and months?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTanner, are you remorseful for what you did?\u201d Espinoza asked him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a father. I took a\u2026\u201d Horner said before getting emotional. \u201cAll I want is to spend one last Christmas with my son, and I\u2019ll tell you everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

9:56 a.m. Morning break<\/h3>\n

The court took a 10-minute recess.<\/p>\n

Body camera video showed investigators asking Horner more questions about what happened in Athena\u2019s driveway.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid she tell you she didn\u2019t want to go with you?\u201d they asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d Horner replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019d you tell her,\u201d they asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going on a ride,\u201d Horner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t try to fight you when you told her we\u2019re going on a ride?\u201d the investigators asked.<\/p>\n

Horner said no and mumbled something about questions that Athena asked him. He said he continued to tell her they were going on a ride.<\/p>\n

Ranger Espinoza later testified that Horner told him Athena\u2019s panties were still on her body. He said he knew that was untrue because he\u2019d seen her nude body.<\/p>\n

Espinoza said Horner finally admitted that he had taken Athena\u2019s pants, and that they were in a backpack in the trash at his house. Investigators did find some of Athena\u2019s clothes at his house.<\/p>\n

The prosecutor asked the Texas Ranger if there was any truth to the claim that Athena\u2019s clothes were thrown on the highway, and he said no.<\/p>\n

\u201cBased on the course of this investigation, I knew that was a lie,\u201d Espinoza testified.<\/p>\n

9:10 a.m. Ranger Espinoza\u2019s testimony continues<\/h3>\n

The trial on Thursday morning began with more testimony from Texas Ranger Job Espinoza, the lead investigator who interrogated Horner and was with him when Athena\u2019s body was located in the Trinity River at Bobo\u2019s Crossing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this point, other than telling you where Athena was located, is there anything else truthful that Tanner Horner has told you,\u201d the prosecutor asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo sir,\u201d Espinoza replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cUp until this point, how many different versions has Tanner Horner told you of how things went down at Athena\u2019s residence,\u201d the prosecutor asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s given me numerous different versions of how the events of that day transpired,\u201d Espinoza said.<\/p>\n

Tanner Horner references alter-ego in murder trial<\/h4>\n

Testimony continued on the second day of Tanner Horner\u2019s murder trial, and he made frequent reference to his alter-ego \u2018Zero\u2019 to investigators. FOX 4\u2019s Dionne Castillo has the latest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

On Wednesday, jurors watched hours of interrogation video. In it, Horner revealed his violent alter ego, who he called Zero.<\/p>\n

The video showed Horner leading authorities to the wrong location of where he said he left Athena\u2019s body. It wasn\u2019t until investigators changed their tactics and started addressing Horner directly as Zero that they were finally able to find Athena\u2019s body.<\/p>\n

    Horner lied about hitting Athena Strand with his truck, prosecutor says<\/h4>\n

    Prosecutors tell jurors that the only thing Tanner Horner actually told the truth about was that he killed 7-year-old Athena Strand. The story about him hitting her with his delivery truck was a lie, according to the state.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    The backstory:<\/p>\n

    Horner was charged with capital murder for the death of 7-year-old\u00a0Athena\u00a0Strand\u00a0outside her family\u2019s Wise County home on Nov. 30, 2022.<\/p>\n

    A contract delivery driver working for FedEx at the time, Horner was delivering what was meant to be a Christmas present for the young girl.<\/p>\n
