    The parents of\u00a0Alex Pretti, the 37-year-old ICU nurse shot and killed by immigration agents in Minneapolis on Jan. 24, have given their first sit-down interview about their late son.<\/p>\n

    Michael and Susan Pretti\u00a0spoke with\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0for a profile on Alex published on Tuesday, Feb. 10, just under three weeks after their son\u2019s\u00a0chaotic death\u00a0was captured on video and viewed by millions on social media.<\/p>\n

    The Prettis said they mute the television and close their eyes whenever the footage of his shooting is shown. Even still, Michael noted, \u201cIt\u2019s so clear as to what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Alex was attending a protest against the Trump administration\u2019s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis on the day of his death. When he approached a group of immigration agents in order to help\u00a0another protester who had been pushed to the ground, they grabbed him and forced him to the ground before shooting him multiple times in the back.<\/p>\n

    Alex often carried a handgun at protests, as he had a valid permit. And his parents say he told them about\u00a0the confrontation he had with federal agents\u00a0on Jan. 13, just days before his death. Video from that incident showed him kicking the back of a vehicle and spitting towards an agent before he was tackled and briefly detained.<\/p>\n

    However, the Prettis\u2019 lawyer, Steven Schleicher, who worked on the\u00a0George Floyd\u00a0trial, said, \u201cNothing that happened a full week before could possibly have justified Alex\u2019s killing.\u201d<\/p>\n

    In the aftermath of Alex\u2019s death, the Trump administration made several public comments that sought to justify Border Patrol\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

    The president labeled Alex an\u00a0\u201dinsurrectionist\u201d and \u201cagitator.\u201d\u00a0White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, who also serves as Trump\u2019s homeland security adviser, branded Alex as a \u201cdomestic terrorist\u201d who \u201ctried to assassinate federal law enforcement.\u201d The Department of Homeland Security\u00a0claimed\u00a0that Alex \u201capproached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun\u201d and \u201cviolently resisted\u201d attempts to disarm him before an agent \u201cfired defensive shots\u201d at the suspect.<\/p>\n

    Alex\u2019s parents characterized the statements as \u201csickening lies.\u201d Video evidence suggests that he never drew his gun and was disarmed by an officer before being fatally shot.<\/p>\n

    \u201cHis last act on this earth, his last thought, was to help this woman,\u201d Michael said. \u201cThe truth is, he was an exceptionally kind, caring man.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cIt\u2019s who he was, every day,\u201d Susan added. \u201cHe\u2019s the same Alex he always was.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Alex\u2019s caring nature led him to the protest in the first place, his parents said. Michael recalled speaking to his son on the phone as the ICE activity in Minneapolis reached a boiling point.<\/p>\n

    \u201cHe said, \u2018Mom, they\u2019re kidnapping kids,\u2019 \u201d Michael recalled. \u201c\u2018Why would anybody do that? Why would people treat each other like that? That just doesn\u2019t make any sense. There\u2019s no reason to.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

    On Feb. 2, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled that Alex\u2019s\u00a0cause of death\u00a0was multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was homicide.<\/p>\n

    Schleicher said that the Prettis are seeking \u201cfacts and accountability\u201d about the day their son was killed.<\/p>\n
