Dilley, Texas<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Concerns are escalating over the deteriorating health of\u00a05-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos<\/strong>, who has been held with his father,\u00a0Adrian Conejo Arias<\/strong>, at the\u00a0South Texas Family Residential Center<\/strong>\u00a0in Dilley.<\/p>\n

Prompting urgent calls from lawmakers, educators, family members, and advocates for his immediate release.<\/p>\n

Liam, who was detained with his father in\u00a0Columbia Heights, Minnesota<\/strong>\u00a0earlier this month during a federal immigration enforcement action, is reported to be increasingly unwell, exhibiting symptoms that have alarmed his mother, school officials, and elected representatives.<\/p>\n

Zena Stenvik<\/strong>, superintendent of the\u00a0Columbia Heights Public Schools District<\/strong>, said she spoke with Liam\u2019s mother,\u00a0Erika Ramos<\/strong>, on January 27 and was told that the young boy has been ill, experiencing fever and other symptoms since arriving at the detention facility.<\/p>\n

Stenvik described Erika as \u201cincredibly distraught\u201d over her son\u2019s condition and expressed deep concern for his well-being.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe symptoms he\u2019s facing are serious,\u201d Stenvik said. \u201cHe has been sick, has a fever, and is not eating.<\/p>\n

His health is clearly declining, and that is very worrying given his age and the conditions in confinement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Erika Ramos had previously told Minnesota Public Radio that Liam was suffering from stomach pain, vomiting, fever, and loss of appetite, which she attributed in part to the quality of food and general conditions inside the detention center.<\/p>\n

The issue gained further national attention when\u00a0Representative Joaquin Castro<\/strong>, a Democrat from\u00a0Texas<\/strong>, visited Liam and his father at the Dilley facility on January 28.<\/p>\n

Castro, who documented the visit on social media, said he spent about 30 minutes with Liam and Adrian, although Liam was asleep during most of the interaction.<\/p>\n

Castro stressed that while Liam was not in immediate physical crisis at the moment of the visit, his emotional state was deeply troubling.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis father told me he hasn\u2019t been himself,\u201d Castro said. \u201cHe\u2019s been sleeping more than usual, and he\u2019s very sad and depressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The congressman also noted that Liam continues to ask about personal items that were seen with him during his initial detention, including his\u00a0knitted blue hat<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Spider-Man backpack<\/strong>, which Castro believes may have been taken from the boy.<\/p>\n

Castro called for Liam\u2019s immediate release, saying that the child\u2019s health and well-being must be prioritized.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe concern for Liam is shared by his family, his school, his classmates, his legal team, and people across the country,\u201d Castro said, emphasizing widespread worry over the young boy\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n

Advocates and community members have echoed Castro\u2019s call, urging federal authorities to consider alternatives to family detention when children are involved, particularly when health concerns are evident.<\/p>\n

As of the latest report, the\u00a0Department of Homeland Security<\/strong>\u00a0has not issued a public response addressing Liam\u2019s declining health or the calls for his release.<\/p>\n

The situation continues to draw scrutiny and debate over immigration enforcement practices, highlighting the growing tension between public health concerns and federal detention policies involving children and families.<\/p>\n
